Martha Louise Carlton, 87, of Bloomington, IN passed away at Bloomington Hospital Friday, April 3, 2009, following a brief illness.

She was born in McLeansboro, IL, August 11, 1921, to William G. and Ada (Meadows) Miller.

She graduated from McLeansboro High School in Illinois with the class of 1940. She worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Indianapolis, IN, and later as a Bank teller in Warsaw and Elkhart, IN. September 4, 1943, she married Samuel E. Carlton. Mr. Carlton later graduated from seminary; he and Louise served at United Methodist Churches in Indiana including Bridgeport, Brazil, Plymouth, Elkhart, Rochester, Griffith, Lafayette, Dyer, Brownsburg, Pendleton, Fort Wayne and Farmland.

She was a member of the Brazil First United Methodist Church, the Homebuilders Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, sang in the church choir and was responsible for church administrative duties.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rev. Samuel E. Carlton; brother Melvin Miller; sister Margaret Moore.

Survivors include her children, Jim Carlton and wife Nedra of Brazil, IN, Jan Anderson and husband Doug of Muncie, IN, Joan Zimmerman and husband Dennis Burch of Bloomington, IN; grandchildren Diana Carlton, Jana Johnson, Melissa Osner, Mark Anderson, Bradley Zimmerman, Meredith Anderson, Mathew Zimmerman and Molly Chasteen; great-grandchildren Nathanial and Zion Osner, Grant Johnson, Marah Osner, Elsa Anderson, Silas Chasteen; brother Cameron Miller of Benton, IL; as well as many friends and extended family members.

Services will be at First United Methodist Church in Brazil, IN, Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Tony Alstott and Dr. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
