John L. Moats, 82, of Flora, IL died at 12:06 AM Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL.

He was born February 14, 1928 in Clay County, IL to Snoda & Mary D. (Carlyle) Moats. He married Marjorie Phyllis Clement on September 23, 1950 in Flora.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from GTE in 1990.

His memberships included the Beau Knott Sunday School Class of the church, Flora Masonic Lodge #204, and Scottish Rite. John loved animals and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and bird feeding.

He is survived by his wife: Phyllis Moats of Flora; two daughters: Kim Nussmeyer & husband Mark of Divernon and Sharon Slaughter & husband Rick of Flora; three grandchildren: Kelly Berard & husband Nick of Parker, CO, Kendall Slaughter of Castle Rock, CO, and Kam Shick & husband Ryan of Charleston; two great-grandchildren: Isaiah & Zayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Tom & Paul Moats), and five sisters (Jean Speagle, Martha Shelton, Betty Tidwell, Ann Chambliss, and Genell Martin).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with Masonic Rites at 7:30 PM.

Memorials may be made to Oil Belt Christian Service Camp.
