Born Augustus Eddy Monnett. Also known as Edward Monnett. Son of Abraham and Catherine Braucher Monnett. Married to Anna (some sources list as Annie) Walton of near Kirkpatrick, Ohio. Father of Ada, Irvine, Rose, and Walter. While he divorced his wife in absentia, she countersued later, and won by argued successfully that Ohio law made no provision for such without proper service of notice. The marriage was reinstated, however, the couple could not reconcile, but could reach an agreement that if she were to relocate away from Ohio, he would provide her with a living stipend and she moved to Chicago.

His brother Mervin suggested that he move to Nebraska where land for ranching was inexpensive and rail lines for stock were good. Increasingly ill, and with only his daughter Rose to care for him, Augustus relocated to Colorado and then Kansas. In later years, Augustus became diabetic and lost his sense of sight. Following his death, his body was returned to Ohio for burial, resting a few feet from his nephew Clark Monnette in Bucyrus' Oakwood Cemetery.

There seems to be some confusion as to where Augustus died. Newspaper accounts place his death in Colorado. However a letter found in the Rare Books Dpeartment at the Los Angeles Public Library (see attached) places his death in NEBRASKA.
