July 10, 2005
Sophia Montaño Cancino, 82, of Flagstaff, died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Mrs. Cancino was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Alameda, N.M., to Miguel and Selsa Montaño. As a teenager, she came to Flagstaff to help her aunt, Frances Chavez, at her restaurant on South San Francisco Street.
She was married to her loving husband, Sam, in December 1941, after which he shipped out with the U.S. Army Air Corps. In January 1945, Mrs. Cancino's mother died, leaving four siblings — Max, Johnny, Miguel and Alice. By this time, the Cancinos had two children of their own. In December 1945, they packed everybody up and moved to Flagstaff. So these two 20-plus-year-olds raised an instant family of six, and had another child two years later.
Mrs. Cancino worked at the Grand Canyon Café for many years and built up a long list of regular customers. She enjoyed ceramics, crocheting and bowling. She won numerous ribbons in the county fair for her ceramic and crochet work.
Mrs. Cancino is survived by three children, Dan Cancino of Gilbert, Mike (Phyllis) Cancino of Phoenix and Dolores (Bob) Schrader of Flagstaff; brothers Johnny (Betty) Montaño of Page and Miguel Montaño of Yuma; sister Alice (Louie) Cancino of Flagstaff; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Sam; and brother Max.
A vigil and holy rosary will be said Thursday at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, 224 S. Kendrick . Funeral Mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, with interment immediately following in the Veteran's section of Citizens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Cancino's name may be made to Northland Hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ 86002.
Arrangements are by Norvel Owens Mortuary.
