Not too much is known about the early life of Hazel. She seems to have been an orphan and the 1920 census lists her and sister Eva as living in the Christian Orphan's Home in St Louis; she was mostly raised on a farm near Dearborn MO by Tillery & Ethelyn Jones. Ethelyn was a teacher at Missouri Christian College which was a forerunner of William Woods College in Fulton MO. Hazel had a sister, Eva, who was also raised by the Jones', and another sister, Gertrude, who lived in Illinois.

Around 2000 a relative tried to learn more about Hazel, but about all that they learned was that her mother had also, at one time, been in the Orphan's Home.
