John "Jack" Moorehead died at home in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at the age of 93, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his children, Ann Schwartz and her husband, Paul, their children, Ryan and Megan, and their grandchild, Emma; Bill Schorling and his wife, Lynne, and their children, Kate, Ann, and John; Sue Schorling and her husband, Cliff Rowland; John Schorling and his wife, Sophie, and their children, Eric and Kelly; as well as his nieces and nephews, Robert Moorehead and his wife, Marilyn, Paul Moorehead and his wife, Marie, Susan Jensen and her husband, Gary, Molly Golemo and her husband, John, andTom Moorehead; and his sister-in-law, Nancy Moorehead.
In addition to his parents and three siblings, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthann "Rudy" Schorling Moorehead; and his recent companion, Jane Tammen.
Jack was born on January 11, 1923, in Cambridge, Ohio, to Flosse and T. Stanley Moorehead. He attended college at Denison University where he received his A.B. degree. He served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He ended his career as Commanding Officer of the LCS(L) 4 after serving 14 months in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he attended law school at Western Reserve University, graduating in 1950. He then served as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After leaving the FBI, he returned to Cambridge to practice law. In 1952, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Guernsey County and served two terms. He later joined the law firm of Tribbie, Scott, and Moorehead and practiced law in Cambridge until 1986 when he retired and moved to Florida.
He was an avid tennis player and played regularly into his 70's.His wife, Rudy suffered a stroke in 1997 and he spent the next seven years as her primary caregiver,a role he performed every day with incredible love and dedication.
In 2007, he returned to Granville, Ohio, where he had attended college at Denison. There he renewed his friendship with Jane Tammen, with whom he had gone to Denison, and they spent the next eight years together. When Jane passed away in 2015, he moved to Charlottesville to be closer to his family. He loved his children and their families and cherished his time with them. He aged very gracefully, approaching life with a sense of humor, and he was always extremely kind and considerate of others. He was a model gracious gentleman and inspired many who knew him to try to emulate his attitude and behavior. Everyone who interacted with him felt better for having done so.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from Home Instead, especially Missy Sims, and the staff of the Hospice of the Piedmont for the care and attention they provided.
