ALIOTO, SANTA ANN Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Born in San Francisco, August 25, 1916, one of seven children. Married in 1942 to Salvatore S. Alioto, also a native of San Francisco. They moved to San Diego in 1945 and lived in Little Italy for two years before purchasing a home in Point Loma. While Mr. Alioto dedicated himself to fishing out of San Diego, Mrs. Alioto was committed to her three children, Rose, John, and Salijo, and the school they attended at St. Agnes Parish. By 1957, Santa developed the first hot lunch program for St. Agnes School. Her Spaghetti Dinner fundraisers and founding of the Day at the Races events raised thousands of dollars for the parish. Mrs. Alioto also donated countless hours at Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and the Sisters of Mercy. By the 1980s, Santa was well known for her authentic Italian cuisine, great enthusiasm, and organizational skills. Santa Alioto won numerous awards for her robust sauces, lasagnas, and crispy cannolis. Her involvement in the Italian-Catholic Federation allowed her to work on the Carnivale Ball, where she was asked for her recipes on countless occasions. Today, there are several cookbooks from San Francisco to San Diego that contain the magic of her special recipes. Santa Ann Alioto was preceded in death by her husband Salvatore in 1974. Santa is survived by her children, Rose Romani and husband Dominic, John Alioto and wife Laura, and Salijo Hendershaw and husband James. Grandchildren are Frank Morehouse Romani, Thomas Morehouse Romani, Greg Alioto and wife Devon, Melissa Alioto, Christina Hendershaw, and Jason Hendershaw. Santa is also survived by her youngest brother Thomas Morana of Cupertino, California. She died on January 9, 2004 from complications of Alzheimer ' s disease. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer ' s Association San Diego Chapter 858-492-4400.
