Charles Joseph Murphy was the son of William and Mary Ann (Owens) Murphy and brother of Edwin, Mary Johnson, Martha Pitney, William, Frances Minton and Susanna Ryerson. Charles was discharged from Engine No. 11, Newark Fire Department, at the time of abolishing the call-system, and was one of those interested in the lawsuit against the city to recover pay. He served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry during the civil war and died at the Soldiers' Home in Kearny, New Jersey. He had one daughter, Ida May (Murphy) Haushalter.
