Rita Catherine Murphy Shugrue, 91, died on Sunday, September 19, 2010, at the Westfield, N.J. home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Catherine and John P. Ryan.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J. on November 30, 1918, Rita was the only child of Edward J. and Catherine (Towey) Murphy.

Educated at St. Patrick's Elementary and High Schools in Elizabeth, Rita was a 1940 graduate of the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, and later earned a master's degree in educational administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange.

Rita began her career as a teacher at her alma mater, St. Patrick's High School, in 1940, and from 1942 to 1947 she taught at Battin High School in Elizabeth. From 1959 to 1964 she was a seventh-grade teacher at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Elizabeth, and in 1967, after moving to Westfield, she joined the faculty of Mother Seton Regional High School in Clark, later serving as vice-principal.

Retiring in 1977, Rita subsequently lived in Beach Haven, Toms River and Glen Ridge, N.J., before returning to Westfield in 2008.

In addition to her career as a teacher and administrator, Rita was an organist at St. Patrick's and Holy Rosary Churches in Elizabeth, and at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Toms River. She was awarded the Jubilee Medal of the Archdiocese of Newark in 1987, and in 1995 was inducted into the St. Patrick's High School Hall of Fame.

Rita was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Timothy D. Shugrue, in 1987. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, Rita is survived by two sons, Reverend Monsignor Timothy J. Shugrue, parochial vicar at St. Michael's Church in Cranford, and James D. Shugrue of Stratford, Conn. Besides her parents and husband, Rita was predeceased by her grandson, Pierce J. Ryan, and her daughter, daughter-in-law, Donna P. Shugrue. She additionally is survived by six grandchildren, Timothy Ryan (Jennifer), Christopher Shugrue (Lynne), Brendan Ryan (Kate), Erin Shugrue, Laura Shugrue and Jason Ryan, and by six great-grandchildren, Annie, Brendan and Maeve Ryan; Brenna Jean Shugrue, and P.J. and Everette Ryan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Rita on Saturday, September 25, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Cranford. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Newark. Relatives and friends are invited to call today, Thursday, September 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow, Friday, September 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Avenue in Westfield.
