DEATH OF AN OMAHA PIONEER. Tuesday one of the pioneer women of this city, Mrs. Mary A. Birkett, aged 68 years, died at her residence, 1015 Mason street, her three living children, Osmund, Bertha and Charles, all residents of the city, being at her bedside.

Mrs. Birkett came to this city in the pioneer days, a young unmarried woman, landing on Omaha soil in 1858. She came to the city almost directly from Worcester county, England, her native home. She joined her three brothers here, two of whom, George and David Neale, are still living and are citizens of Omaha. Some two years after her arrival she married Charles P. Birkett, a lawyer well known in this city, who died three years ago this month. The married life of the couple was spent entirely in this city, with the exception of a short interval, when the husband was Indian agent at Yankton, S. D. During all this time, too, they lived in the house in which Mrs. Birkett died.

Mrs. Birkett was a woman of gentle dignity and of such character as gained her hosts of friends and few enemies. Her life was marked with good deeds, which rarely attained publicity, and the duties that life presented to her were scrupulously performed. She always manifested a great interest in the growth of the city and assisted in its upbuilding as much as it was possible for a woman. This interest seemed to increase as the pioneers of the city, the companions of her youthful days, gradually passed away.

The funeral will occur this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late residence to St. Mathias' church, with interment in Prospect Hill cemetery.
