She was born Jan. 22, 1911, the fifth child of Nels T. and Ida (Bjerke) Nelson, on the family farm in Elk Lake Township in Grant County. She attended the Greenwood Grade School and graduated from high school in Barrett. She continued her education at the Park Region Luther College in Fergus Falls. Her first years of employment were at the Grant County Courthouse in Elbow Lake, during the WPA days of the 1930s. She went on to work with those programs in Morris, St. Cloud, and finally in St. Paul. She worked as a bookkeeper for Mid-Am Dairy until retirement.
In September of 1941, she married John M. Harnett. Mr. Harnett died on July 9, 1987. Mrs. Harnett was a very generous person, and her home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay. That offer included her cabin on Sugar Lake near Annandale.
Survivors include her sister Laila (Dennis) Hedstrom of Hoffman; a brother, Clarence Nelson of the Hoffman Good Samaritan Center; a sister-in-law Ermal (Mrs. Tenney) Nelson of Hoffman; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; two sisters, Bernice Pearson and Ruby Chayer; and five brothers Tenney, Arley, Clifford, Arley C. and Malcolm.
Service: Was 2 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Hoffman
