Alice Bertina (Tangen) NESS

Alice Ness, 89, a long-time Seattle resident, passed away peacefully July 9, 2012, surrounded by relatives. Alice was born in Seattle on June 3, 1923, two months after her mother and father, Hansina and Lasse Tangen, and three uncles emigrated from Sogn, Norway. All of them lived together in her father's house in the Fremont neighborhood. Alice's mother died from tuberculosis when Alice was five, and two years later her father died of a stroke at age 56. When he died, Alice's oldest uncle Leidolf and his wife Christine agreed to take responsibility for Alice. When Alice was 11 in 1934, they all went to Norway and spent a year on her grandmother's farm where she attended school. After returning, Alice attended Ballard High School and graduated in 1941. She then spent six happy years working at the main office of the Seattle First National Bank.

Although Alice and Harold Ness knew each other from Ballard High School, they were brought together by their mutual love of Scandinavian dancing at Harmony Hall and started dating in 1942. Harold soon afterward volunteered to join the Army for World War II and was stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska, for a year and a half. When he came back on furlough in August 1944, he and Alice got married. Harold was then sent to Adak Island for another year and a half while Alice remained in Seattle.

After the war ended, Harold, his brother, and his father built a house in the Greenwood neighborhood where he and Alice spent 22 years and raised three sons, Larry, Eric and Randy. In 1950, Harold and Alice bought two cranes and started Ness Crane Service, which originally operated out of their home. While Harold was out at construction sites, Alice worked the telephone while keeping an eye on two toddlers. (She even had a 50-foot telephone cord which allowed her to take calls while pinning diapers to the clothesline in the back yard!)

In 1968, Harold and Alice moved into their dream home in the Magnolia neighborhood. They continued their love of dancing by participating in three dance clubs: the Good Times Dance Club and two at the Broadmoor Country Club. Alice also enjoyed playing bridge with several groups and was an active member of Magnolia Lutheran Church, the Ballard High School Golden Beavers, the Leif Erikson Lodge of the Sons of Norway, and the Nordic Heritage Museum.

Harold and Alice loved traveling the world, taking many cruises and tours with friends. They visited over 80 countries, and especially enjoyed their trips to China, Turkey, Portugal, and their parents' homeland, Norway, where many first cousins still live. Closer to home, they took many motor-home trips with the Rambling Antlers RV group.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Alice will be fondly remembered for her hospitality, her positive outlook on life, and the value she placed on her many friendships. She will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched.

Alice was preceded in death by Harold, her beloved husband of 57 years. Alice will be dearly missed by her three sons and their wives: Larry (Jane), Eric (Kathryn), and Randy (Anne); four grandchildren: Andy (Audra), Sarah (Andrew) Christianson, Berit and David; and two great-grandchildren, Caden and Bailey. She is also survived by nephews Tom (Becky) Anderson, Chris (Terrie Rae) Anderson, Phil (Carol) Ness, and Cory (Kathy) Ness, and niece Mary (Bill) Conroy. After a private memorial service, the family will hold a buffet luncheon to celebrate her life from 1 to 4 PM (with a presentation at 2 PM) on Saturday, July 21, at the Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th St., Seattle. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice .
