Barbara Ness Jaquith, 76, passed away on Sept. 7, 2010, at the Beartooth Hospital and Health Care Center after a long illness. Barbara was born on April 21, 1934, at the family farm near Byron, Minn. She was the daughter of Joe and Phyllis Ness. Barbara grew up on the farm and was active in 4-H and was the high school homecoming queen. Barbara was a foreign exchange student in Finland an also traveled to Norway becoming the first person in her extended family to return to Norway. On April 27, 1957, Barbara married Philip "Jake" Jaquith at the Byron Methodist Church. They were soon joined by four children Martha, Paul, Joe and Kari. They lived the life of a Forest Service family serving at a number of stations until they finally settled in Red Lodge, where Jake retired as District Ranger. Barbara served the community of Red Lodge taking calls day and night many years on the ambulance crew. She also had a full career as a realtor. Barbara was a passionate bird watcher and outdoor enthusiast. She was a longtime member of a number of conservation groups especially the Audubon Society. She conducted sage grouse research for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. She was an accomplished quilter and a member of the charity quilters. She loved international travel, visiting Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Australia and other exotic destinations. She loved to play cards, cook and spend time with her family. It was with her grandchildren that her life completely shined through. The countless hours of unending energy that she single mindedly devoted to her grandchildren will be the lasting legacy of her life.
