Emily Ness Betteridge was born 4 Dec 1880 to Benjamin and Margaret Ann Coulson Ness, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. She was the sixth child in the Ness family. When Emily was 5 years old her father died of stone mason's consumption.

"When Emily was 14 years old the Ness family moved to Leeds, a large industrial city. Eventually she found work with various dressmaking establishments, primarily the "Pygmalion." This was an exclusive shop and catered to the wishes of the elite. Emily was proficient and neat in her work and very particular in tying off threads, never leaving any loose ends. When she sewed on a button, it was there to stay. She received many compliments on her work.

She became interest in the Mormon religion in her early twenties. She was baptized April 19, 1902 at age 22 by William A. Cornaby and confirmed on the same day by her future husband, James W. Betteridge.

When James came home from his mission he wrote to Emily for a time and then she came by ship and train to Utah to be his wife. Emily sailed from England on August 24, 1904. James and Emily were married on Oct 19th, 1904 in the salt Lake Temple by John R. Winder.

Emily was a favorite with the children – nieces, nephews and neighbor children. She would charm and entertain them with stories of her childhood in England. Youngsters would ask Aunt Emily to relate the same story many times.

In April of 1917, they, with their six daughters and all of their belongings, made the big move to Prove Bench. Two more children were added to the family including a long waited son, which made eight children for Emily to look after. There they raised fruit and vegetables that they sold.

Emily and the girls helped out a great deal on the farm, especially in the harvesting of all the produce as it ripened, such as the various kinds of fruit and digging up the vegetables for winter use, picking of tomatoes and cucumbers for the cannery and a great deal of hoeing.

As the years went by, it was found difficult to maintain a farm with a family of girls and one boy, who at the time, was too young to be of assistance so the family moved to 3737 South on 9th East. After residing there a number of years the decision was made to move from 3737 South 9th East to 2838 South 20th East. There would be less land to cultivate and the new home would be more convenient and closer to James's work at the University of Utah. This came about in the early fall of 1946.

At this time Emily's health began to fail little by little. She never complained even though some days she was very miserable. She also began to have eye problems. The eye doctor diagnosed the condition as acute glaucoma. Dr. Fairbanks performed the operation, however, too much damage had been done from the rapidly deteriorating eye condition, and she eventually lost her sight.

Emily passed away quietly June 11 1953. She was laid to rest in the Sunset Lawn Burial Gardens in Salt Lake City, Utah.
