York County’s Traffic Death Toll Reaches 22

A Glen Rock R.D. 3 woman was fatally injured in York yesterday afternoon and a York man, struck by an automobile in York Monday night, died last night, increasing York County’s highway death toll for the year to 22.
Mrs. Phyllis Ness Bensel, 29, wife of Howard E. Bensel, received fatal injuries in a collision of her automobile and a truck carrying 10 tons of asphalt at South Duke Street and East College Avenue, York, about 1 p.m. Two of her four sons in the car with her were injured, one critically.
Mrs. Bensel was thrown from the car and under one of the wheels of the truck, operated by William H. Hersh, 18, of 138 Jackson Street, Spring Grove. The truck, owned by the driver’s father, Stewart Hersh, Codorus, was leased to C. P. Craumer, Inc., Thomasville trucking firm, police reported.
William Bensel, 4, was confined to the intensive care unit of the York Hospital with possible internal injuries and an arm fracture. Gregory Bensel, 8, had a fracture of the collarbone and bruises. He was reported in satisfactory condition at the hospital. Brian Bensel, 6, and Howard Bensel, 9, were examined at the hospital and found to have been unhurt.
York police said four witnesses reported the Bensel car, northbound on Duke Street, passed a red traffic signal. The truck was moving east on College Avenue. After the collision the car hit a signal light pole.
Mrs. Bensel was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Ness, Glen Rock R.D. 1. She was a member of St. Jacob’s (Stone) Church, near Glenville.
Survivors are her husband, her four sons, her parents, three brothers, S. Kenneth Ness, New Freedom R.D.; Harry Ness, Dover, and Clarence Ness, Stewartstown; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Chinault, Seven Valleys, and Mrs. Naomi MacFarland, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and her grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Dehoff, York R.D. 8.
The funeral will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at the Geiple Funeral Home, Glen Rock. The Rev. Dr. K. S. Ehrhart, her pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery.
