Howard Milton (Pete) Newhouse
January 14, 1938 - January 4, 2013

Howard M. (Pete) Newhouse passed peacefully into the hands of God on January 4, 2013 from lung cancer. He was born in Dallas, Texas on January 14, 1938-- the son of Winnie Mae and Howard Dee Newhouse. He married Ruth Ice, "the best thing that ever happened to him", in June of 1971 (That's 41 years of marriage). They had two sons: Jeffrey Newhouse and Matthew Newhouse who both made him proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their love and support throughout his life. He has two daughters- in- law: Lea Anne and Amy respectively. He treasured both of them and valued the support and love they added not only to his life, but to his sons' lives as well. His granddaughter, Emma, brought a "twinkle" to his eyes, a "flutter" to his heart, and "great joy" into his life since her birth nearly three years ago. Pete is further survived by a brother, Vernon Campbell, and 8 nieces and nephews along with numerous great nieces and nephews.
Pete graduated from Forest/ Crozier Tech High School; attended Eastfield College and UT Arlington; joined the Army National Guard in his teens and went on to serve on active duty in Korea, Germany, Texas, Kentucky, and 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. During his active duty service he received many commendations including 3 bronze stars (one with valor),the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a Silver Star, the Air Medal with 18 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal and many more. After Vietnam he left the military and went to school and to work in the private sector. He held numerous positions and even ran his own company for a while. Later he rejoined the National Guard and remained until 1998. In total, Pete served his country for 27 years and retired from the Army National Guard. He had a love of country that was part of everything he did. During retirement Pete and Ruth (alias "Pedro" and "Toots"), along with friends and family traveled many places throughout the world. He often commented that he "had no idea he would personally visit so much of the world". He took Ruth on many journeys she never dreamed she would go on either. They were certified divers. Pete told Ruth he wanted to learn diving. Ruth said, "go for it"; not expecting to be recruited to join him in his oceanic adventures with "critters of the sea". They did "zip lines" in Jamaica, fed the stingrays in Grand Cayman, Parasailed in the Bahamas, and did the 28 mile bike trek from the Haleakala volcano in Hawaii. Pete was nearly 70 when they did it. He was told he was the oldest person they had seen complete it. (Ruth talked him into that one), "Pedro" and "Toots" went to the Baltic, London, Russia and many other places. They loved to visit Niagara Falls and other spots in Canada. Their adventures as were "well suited" playmates went on- and- on. His family and love of country were the center of his life. He put that life at risk to defend her, and carried the memories throughout his life. Pete was a nearly silent, but valiant "warrior" for his country and his family; a man of truth, integrity and honor.
