Aaron Newman, son of David and Elizabeth Phillips Newman, was born in Blount County Tennessee on May 16, 1816. He came to Washington County in 1835 with his parents and younger brothers and sister. On November 17, 1836, Aaron married Elizabeth Teel in Washington County Illinois. She was a daughter of Peter and Susan Teel who came into Washington County in 1825. They came from Spencer, Owen County Indiana,where Elizabeth was born on March 9, 1820. In March 1847, Aaron bought 80 acres of land from his brother Henry for the sum of $100.00. This land and the old homeplace is just west of the Liberty Cemetey along Route 460. It was here the fifth child, Martha Jane, was born, as well as Martha's children and some of her grand children. The children of Aaron and Elizabeth were: Sarah Ann, b-1838 (married William J Foster): Daniel L, b & d 1841: David Monroe, born 1842 (married Mary M Clark): Mary E b-1845 (married A W White): Martha Jane b-1847 (married Thomas Smith): Lorenzo Dow b-1849 (married Mary E Thompson): and Simon Walker b-1852 (married Ruth Whittenburg)
Aaron died November 10, 1883 and Elizabeth died September 1, 1903, in Washington County. The entire family is buried at Liberty cemetery with exception of David and Lorenzo. Elizabeth suffered a severe fall and was an invalid for the last 15 years of her life. She lived with the family of her daughter, Martha Jane Smith, until her death.
