MATTOON — Jean Carlen, age 91, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 3:42 p.m., Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at her residence.
The funeral service in her honor will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938. Reverend John Dryden will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, beginning one hour prior to the service (12:00 p.m.)
Born August 20, 1921, in Charleston, IL, Jean was the daughter of Charles R. and Daisy (Millage) Newman. She married Robert L. Carlen, Sr., on December 31, 1947, in Charleston, IL. He passed away on April 26, 1989. Survivors include three children, Robert L. Carlen, Jr., and wife Sheila of Houston, TX, Fredrick X. Carlen and wife Karen of Mattoon, IL, and Eugene Carlen and wife Donna of Greenup, IL; eleven grandchildren, Christina Lopez, Jennifer Ray and husband Jeff of Denver, CO, Carrie Johnson and husband Courtney of Mattoon, IL, Fred Carlen and wife Amy of Mattoon, IL, Jered Carlen and wife Renee of Staunton, IL, Renee Jones and husband Mike of Decatur, IL, Jessica Carlen of Houston, TX, Megan Selby and husband Joe of Houston, TX, Joseph Carlen of Mattoon, IL, Dustin Clairess of Mattoon, IL, and Tony Carlen of Greenup, IL. She also leaves seventeen great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Stephen M. Carlen, one brother, four sisters, and one great grandson.
Mrs. Carlen formerly worked as a crossing guard for the Mattoon Police Department and had volunteered at Mattoon Health Care. She was involved with local politics and served as an election judge for Lafayette Township. Jean loved working with children and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
