Margaret was the eldest child of Robert Wilson Nisbet 1796-1876 and Mary Goldie 1806-1881 both of Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland. Margaret married John Burns on 7th December 1849 at Mauchline and before their first wedding anniversary they had boarded the ship "Brooksly" bound for the United States of America arriving at New York on 2nd October 1850. She was pregnant with their first child when they sailed away from Glasgow but tragically their tiny daughter who they named Isabelle died shortly after birth before they set foot in their new home country. By 1870 and 7 further children later the family had settled in Appleton City, St Clair County, Missouri. Two more daughters followed and grandchildren started to appear. Margaret died in 1901 at the age of 72, the matriarch of a family which was to go on with a flourish. She is buried in the local Appleton Cemetery.
