Longtime Great Kills resident Margaret Johannessen, 83, a loving mother and grandmother who gave generously of her time and energy to help others, died Thursday at Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, where she had resided for six months.

Born Margaret O'Sullivan in Brooklyn, she was brought to Grant City as a child and graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School. She settled in Great Kills in the late 1950s.

Mrs. Johannessen volunteered at St. Clare's School in Great Kills and Moore Catholic High School in Graniteville while her children were students there. For many years, she also visited with and shopped for elderly members of St. Clare's R.C. Church, where she was a devoted parishioner. And she was a volunteer in the parent support group, helping young parents care for their children.

She was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed mysteries. She also liked to play bingo.

"She adored her grandchildren, Joey, Grant, Laura and Sarah," said her daughter, Cathy Dobiszewski.

Mrs. Johannessen's husband of more than fifty years, Grant H., died in 2007.

Surviving, along with her daughter, Cathy, and her grandchildren, are her daughters, Clare Johannessen and Karen Kenny; her brothers, Michael and Roger O'Sullivan; and three sisters, Mary Ball, Kathleen Francis, and Sheila Munday.

The funeral will be held on Monday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a Mass at 9:45 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Clare's Church.
Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
