On September 4, 1913 he married Auguste Viktoria, Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Following his death, the seniority of the Royal House of Portugal was transferred to his distant cousin Miguel II, Duke of Braganza. Royalist movements in Portugal subsequent to 1910 have failed to restore the Braganza dynasty.
