Mildred O'Neal Burnett Brehe died Jan. 22, 2010, after living with Parkinson's disease for several years. She was 91.

She was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Holt's Summit, Mo., just across the Missouri River from Jefferson City. She was married to Melvin Brehe for 68 years. Both of them moved to Helena in 2005 and lived at the Waterford Retirement Community.

She was actively involved in the United Methodist Church and community activities in Springfield, Ill., Watseka, Ill., Richmond, Ky., and Marietta, Lima and Defiance, Ohio. Not long after retirement in 1974, they moved to Defiance where they lived until 2005. While in Defiance, they owned and managed a dry goods store for about five years. An avid reader, she enjoyed taking part in literary clubs. When she wasn't home, she often could be found working at the Defiance Hospital thrift shop. She was proud to be a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She supported her husband, who was a JCPenney store manager, throughout his career.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin Brehe of Helena; son, Stephen (Jacqueline) Brehe of Helena; daughter-in-law, Priscilla (William) Pixler of Defiance; three grandchildren, Nelson Pixler of Toledo, Ohio, Matthew Brehe of Seattle, Wash., and Nathan Brehe of Helena; and a sister, Victoria (James) Hammen of Jefferson City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Brehe; her parents, E.D. and Blanche Burnett; and a sister, Dorice Perkins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Defiance, Ohio, officiated by Rev. Dr. Mark A. Shimer.
