Mary Alice (Ontiveros) Garcia

“One of these mornin's you're gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky…”
--“Summertime,” by George Gershwin & Dubose Heyward

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Mary Alice Garcia passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Hospice Brazos Valley’s Inpatient Facility while surrounded by her family. She was 65 years old.
Born February 12, 1951, in Bryan, Mary Alice was the oldest of six children and would live most of her life here. Her parents were Tim Ontiveros and Carolina Ontiveros, a handyman/jack-of-all-trades (who knew how to complete any task) and a homemaker, respectively. While Tim was employed by both Allen Academy and Texas A&M University, the Ontiveros family grew to include six children, including: Mary Alice, Sally Reyes, Tim Ontiveros, Eddie Ontiveros Sr., Manuel Ontiveros Sr. and Ruth Bermudez. Mary Alice had an all-American childhood: she attended Bowie Elementary, where she was a good student and a track star, winning many ribbons. She also joined Brownies and Girl Scouts. She would eventually graduate from Stephen F. Austin High School. As a young student, she worked on staff at The Eagle and Jarrett’s, so that she could buy her own school clothes. She also later found employment with AT&T (10 years), OMC Industries (13 years) and finally, Bryan ISD at both Carver Elementary and Arthur L. Davila Middle School. During her time as a secretary, Mary Alice was a whiz at typing, unafraid of long hours as she finished her daily work, breaking only to attend each official campus event as she guided students on a daily basis.
While still in high school, Mary Alice loved to dance and met her lifelong sweetheart, Isabel Cecil Garcia, at Lakeview Dance Hall in Bryan. Their romantic dates consisted of spending Sunday afternoons at Jarrett’s , often enjoying a hamburger and a Cherry Coke. Then they would go to the movies at the Queen Theater. They were married on November 29, 1969. They began their life together in Bryan, living in Dallas for a year, Houston for 10 years, and eventually coming back home to Bryan. Their loving union has endured for 47 years, and they are the parents of three children: Severo (and wife, Kathy), Mark (and wife, Veronica) and Erica (and husband, Joel Gonzalez). Once she became a mother, Mary Alice found her calling in life as she protected and supported her children—and at length, her grandchildren—unconditionally. She excelled at making each individual person in her family feel especially loved and uniquely important as she prepared specific gifts for family members at each holiday and even wore photo buttons displaying their pictures. When her grandchildren played on competing sports teams, Mary Alice would wear a t-shirt displaying both teams’ colors—which she’d had made—then sit on the sidelines near the middle of the field, cheering both teams on in order to show her impartiality. Thus, each of her ten grandchildren now believes that he or she was Mary Alice’s favorite since she was present for all of their cheerleading, soccer, choir, softball, football, baseball, and dance events. Apart from watching her family perform and compete, she was also a devoted fan of the Texas A&M Aggies, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs. Most importantly, Mary Alice was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ, prayer leader, and spiritual leader of her family.
Indeed, Mary Alice never missed participating in any activity that was important to those she loved. She worked tirelessly to mold her children and grandchildren into kind, capable people as she also carefully arranged everything in her life—from her desk at work to family gatherings—to ensure that the people she loved felt nurtured, happy and safe. Spending time with them was one of her favorite activities, along with listening to Tejano music, dancing, completing crossword puzzles, driving around town in her Red Ford Mustang, and traveling to San Antonio with the love of her life to visit Market Square and the various fiestas there. She also took great pride in being “Mrs. Disco Duck”. Her and her husband, “Disco Duck”, would DJ on Friday nights at Margie’s Bar & Grill and other events. Mr. and Mrs. “Disco Duck” most recently became the “Official” DJs of La Compania Car Club. Family and friends already miss her loving, loyal presence and strong sense of purpose.
Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Tim & Carolina Ontiveros. She is survived by her beloved husband, Cecil, their sons and daughters-in-law, Severo & Kathy Garcia and Mark & Veronica Garcia, and their daughter and son-in-law, Erica & Joel Gonzalez. Her siblings and their spouses also survive her: Eddie Ontiveros, Sr. & Norma Navarro, Tim & Mary Ontiveros, Manuel & Nora Ontiveros, Ruth & Isidro Bermudez, and Sally & Gerardo Reyes. Mary Alice’s grandchildren are also remembering her now, and they are: Summer Nix, Sierra Garcia, Mark Garcia Jr., Timothy Garcia, Allison Zamora, Marisol Garcia, Briana Garcia, Alexa Garcia, Madyson Gonzalez and Jordyn Gonzalez.
Family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate the life of Mary Alice Garcia from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. All are invited to join together as a community at 6:30 pm; kneeling in humbleness before God, occupying their voices, minds, hearts, and bodies by praying the Rosary to ask for God's Grace. The Life Celebration and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 6, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan with Msgr. John McCaffrey as celebrant with interment to follow at Bryan City Cemetery.
The Garcia and Ontiveros Family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the entire staff of CHI St Joseph and Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility for their endless care and support.
