Clotilda "Tilly" Ontiveros Gomez passed away peacefully into the arms of her eternal companion, Ruben, on January 23, 2010 at St. Mark's Hospital in Millcreek Township, Utah of causes incident to age.
Tilly was born June 3, 1918 in Chihuahua, Mexico to Marcelina Ogas and Julian Ontiveros, "the best parents ever."
On May 24, 1919, when just eleven months old, she came to this country with her parents and her older sister Lucy. They eventually settled in Midvale, Utah, becoming the first Mexican family to live there.
Tilly attended elementary and junior high schools in Midvale, and Jordan High School in Sandy. Three months before her graduation from Jordan High School, Tilly took a job in Salt Lake City to help with the finances of the family, which now numbered 11. She worked in the ZCMI department store beauty parlor and also modeled clothing for them in the Tiffin Room.
Her parents were taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ and were baptized on November 5, 1933. Tilly had to gain her own testimony and was baptized four months later on March 10, 1934, with her sister Lucy.
While working in Salt Lake, Tilly attended the Mexican LDS Branch, where she met a happy fun loving young man named Ruben Gomez. They were married on December 24, 1936, and eventually had eight children. They were later sealed as an eternal family on October 13, 1962 in the Manti Temple.
She devoted her life to serving her family and her Church. After Ruben's retirement they served as companions on four missions in the Midvale Utah Spanish Branch and the Ecuador Guayaquil, Guatemala Quetzaltenango and Mexico City Temple Missions.
When they came home to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary their family numbered close to 100. Tilly enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening and served twice as President of the Holladay Rose Ramblers Garden Club. She loved serving in all her Church callings especially as Relief Society President.
She loved her family very much especially her very talented musician, handyman, friend, and eternal companion, Ruben, who passed away on March 16, 2006.
She is survived by seven children, Richard (Janice), Carola (Seth) Ontiveros, Andrew (Karen), David (Vicki), Jeanie (Doyle) Crowley, Daniel (Pam), and Timothy (Marilee); twenty-one grandchildren; fifty-five great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; brothers Andrew Ontiveros and James (Glenda) Ontiveros; brothers-in-law Pete Gomez, Val (Gladys) Gomez and Ray Mende and sisters-in-law Betty Ontiveros and Maria Astorga. Preceded in death by her parents, son Ruben Michael; brothers Jose, Manuel, and Mike; and sisters Victoria, Lucy, Mary, Margaret, Gloria, and Betty.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. in the South Cottonwood Ward Chapel, 5606 South Vine Street (730 East), Murray. A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Memorial Estates Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, and at the chapel from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
