Marlys Olive (Osten) Grabarkewitz, age 82, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at her home.
Marlys was born on January 27, 1932 in Pelican Rapids, MN, the daughter of Ole and Marit (Resset) Osten. She grew up in Norwegian Grove Township attended Country School District #52, then graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1950.
After attending college and working she married Charles Norman Grabarkewitz on August 23, 1952 at West North Immanuel Church. They have two daughters Cheryl and Carol. After 12 years in Ohio the family made their home near Pelican Rapids. Marlys opened her own upholstery shop, Marlys's Upholstery, at home and later moved it into town where she and her daughters started the fabric shop Calico Cupboard.
Marlys loved to sing. After singing with the Sweet Adeline's in Ohio, she also founded and directed a chapter in Pelican Rapids and helped her niece, Patti (Sha) Cooke start a chapter in New Zealand. She loved singing in the church choir.
Marlys's other passion was sewing. Her family has slept wrapped in the love of her garments and quilts for years.
Marlys will be greatly missed, by all those who knew her.
Marlys is survived by her husband, Charles, of 61 years, daughters Cheryl (Steve) Rotz, Erhard, MN and Carol (Jeff) Borremans, Green Bay, WI; 5 grandchildren: Stephanie (Bernie) Poegel, Jessica Rotz, Andrew (Amber) Borremans, Adam Borremans and Sarah Borremans; 5 great-grandchildren: Samuel Rotz, Michael Borremans, Colby, Ava and Carter Poegel: brother, Harold (Karen) Osten, Pelican Rapids, MN, brother-in law, Richard (Kay) Grabarkewitz and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ole and Marit Osten, sister and brother-in-law Rose and Richard Sha.
Visitation: Tuesday, June 3, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN.
