Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until February 11, 1946.

Walter served as a Private First Class, 5307th Composite Unit, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Buncombe County, North Carolina prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 7, 1940, prior to the war, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Walter was serving as part of the Drop Crew on C-47 #41-38709, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force.

C-47 #41-38709 took off, with a crew of 3 and a drop crew of 4, from Dinjan, India on a Cargo Drop Mission over Myitkyina, Burma (Myanmar).

They crashed due to bad weather in the remote mountains of Burma. The crash site was discovered in 1987 and some of the remains were recovered at that time. It is unsure whose remains were and were not recovered.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
