Suggested edit: In World War II, Thomas served in the United States Coast Guard on the U.S.S. Callaway, an assault Coast Guard manned transport. He was one of thirty-one crew members who died as the result of a suicide attack on the ship on January 8, 1945. Thomas died on January 8, 1945 and was buried in the China Sea at Latitude 16 degrees 27' N and Longitude 119 degrees 14' E.
