Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. The son of John Gorham Palfrey, author, educator, abolitionist and U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. A graduate of West Point class of 1857, he served as Brevet 2nd Lieutenant Corps of Engineers before the Civil War. He continued with the Corps of Engineers during the war and was breveted Lieut, Colonel March 26, 1865 for gallant and Meritorious Services in the Siege of Mobile, Alabama and Bvt. Colonel and Bvt. Brig.‑General, U. S. Army, Mar. 26, 1865,
for Gallant and Meritorious Services during the Rebellion. He was the brother of Brevet Brigadier General Francis Winthrop Palfrey.
