She was born Gladys Lucille Palmer on April 14, 1919, in Great Bend, Ohio, the last of nine brothers and sisters to William A. and Roxie C. (Hughes) Palmer. She spend her childhood and young adult years in Meigs County, Ohio, and Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and was an avid athlete and sports fan. An adventurous woman, legend has it that she once swam across the Ohio River. This adventure led her to travel to southern California, where she worked for many years in banking and sales. She resided in Santa Ana, California, with her husband of 24 years, Edmund F. Lawson, who preceded her in death in 1981.
It was in southern California, where she then met Richard Randolph Bickers, whom she married in 1984. She accompanied Richard back to Orange, Virginia, where he preceded her in death in 1007 and she resided until her passing.
Gladys Palmer Bickers dearly loved her husbands, extended families, wonderful caregivers, friends, and all those that helped her. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and their descendents.
Funeral services will be held 6 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange with Pastor Richard Pennington officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Interment will be at a later date at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Horizons Church, 12 Flatford Road, Stafford, VA 22554 or the American Cancer Society.
