Sherman Payne, 97, of Flora, IL died at 11:45 AM Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Flora Rehab & HealthCare Center in Flora.

He was born October 21, 1913 in rural Clay City, Illinois to Crawford S. & Bertha (Earhart) Payne. He married Zelma G. Taylor on November 1, 1941 in Flora. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2000.

Sherman worked as a carpenter and a farmer and enjoyed fishing. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Flora where is was a past trustee of the church.

Surviving are 2 daughters: Norma Blankenbeker & husband Winferd of Willow Hill and June Payne & special friend Mike Theroff of Flora; 2 granddaughters: Lora Fink & husband Bruce of Salem and Sara Fitzmaurice & husband Steve of Willow Hill; 5 great-grandchildren: Levi & Layna Fitzmaurice / Nathan, Jeremy & Caleb Fink; 1 sister: Dorothy Brown & husband Steve of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 5 brothers (Robert, Walter, Glen, Earl & Ralph Payne), and 2 sisters (Edna Wyatt & Amy Grabowski).

Funeral services will be held March 16, 2011 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or Gideons International.
