Catherine Mitchell Butts, born in Glennville, Alabama in 1857, was a daughter of Francis Clements Butts and Catherine Eleanor "Kitty" Daniell. Her death certificate mistakenly lists her father as David Butts. David was her brother. Her father died 9 February 1859. Between 1860 and 1870, Kate's mother remarried to Hodijah ELAM. The family resided in Americus, Sumter county, Georgia. On 14 September 1882 in Sumter County, Kate married William E. Payne. They removed to Greenville, Alabama. By 1900, they had moved to Mobile, Alabama. Censuses record that they had no children. William died in February 1924. Kate died in Mobile, Alabama and was buried on 23 November 1925.
