Bettsy Perry Robertson Hardaway, 95, of Greenville, SC, widow of Eads Graham (Tank) Hardaway, passed away on July 3, 2016.

Bettsy was born July 17, 1920 in Jackson, TN. She was the daughter of the late Margaret McLean and Ralph H. Perry, editor with the Nashville Tennessean, and stepdaughter of the late William A. R. Robertson.

Bettsy spent her formative years in Washington DC, where her mother Margaret worked for the Speaker of the House, Joseph W. Byrns, Sr. in the Roosevelt Administration.

Bettsy’s stepfather was a pilot in the Army Air Corp. and her family moved to the Philippines in 1938 along with her sisters Gladys, Audrey and brother, Robbie. While in the Philippines she met and married her beloved husband Tank in 1940 at Clark Field, Manila.

Bettsy and Tank lived in many places over the course of their marriage and Tank’s military career, from Columbia, SC, West Point, NY, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Kansas, Colorado, Norfolk, VA, Verona and Livorno, Italy, and their longest tour of duty, for 9 years, in Alexandria, VA. Upon Tank’s retirement from the Army in 1966 they settled in Greenville, SC. Bettsy said her happiest years were here on Lakecrest Drive in Greenville. She spoke fondly of her many friends at First Presbyterian Church and their Furman Community. She loved to cook and to entertain family and friends. Bettsy was an avid golfer and swimmer in her youth and later an accomplished painter, a knitting enthusiast, a talented seamstress and always a supporter and lover of the arts.
