Mary's father died when she was 4 years old and she, with her mother and older sister, went to live with an aunt, Mary Mixer, and her husband, Dr Henry Mixer. She is listed in all census records as "Mary Phelps" but also as "daughter" of Dr. and Mrs. Mixer.
After her marriage the young couple continued living in their home. The entire family moved together to Neosho, Missouri, where Mary's husband opened a hardware store.
Mary had five sons in all. Her mother was an artist, her father's family had a long history of navy service and education as lawyers, and her foster father was a doctor who had served in the Civil War. She made it the work of her life to see that all five sons had an extensive education in the classics, poetry, and history. All of them could recite poetry at length all their lives. They spoke of her with great admiration even though she died when they were very young men.
