Mary was born May 30, 1922, in Kansas City, the only child of James Ethern and Hallie (Stewart) Phelps. She was named in the family tradition on her mothers' Stewart side of the family. Mary Elizabeth Stewart is the sister of her mother Hallie who was a registered nurse.
She married first John M. Abbott, Jr. on Aug. 9, 1941, in Kansas City, MO. The both attended and graduated Northeast High School. They were parents of two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Abbott and Patricia Louise Abbott. They divorced in January 1970. John remarried in March 1970.
Mary second marriage in January 1971 to Fred Reed at Fairview Christian Church in Gladstone, MO. Fred was a widow and his son Scott came to the wedding. The reception was at her home on Hickory Circle in Gladstone, MO which was sold as she moved to Durango, CO where Fred worked and lived. He owned a surveying company and Mary worked there, I believe before and after the wedding. They lived in a condo on La Plata road in town. They divorced in March of 1972 she continued working for Fred.
She met and worked for Bill Horther, an attorney in Durango around 1976 I am not sure, however, Bill moved into her condo and they lived and worked together for a number of years until his death in 1983. They would almost always fly to Kansas City for Christmas holidays. He always talked about his children and how proud of them he was. Bill had health issues and was not able to overcome them. Was very sad, he was a good person.
In May 1983 Mary married Clarence Fox at the chapel at Ft Lewis college. They divorced April 1984. My grandmother (her mother) had cancer during this time she lived in Kansas City, MO. Clarence moved his 'stuff' out of the condo leaving no note or anything while Mary was with her dying mother Hallie Phelps. Not sure she ever found him but did divorce him and in 1985 moved back to Kansas City, MO.
