The Rev. Eugene Elmer Pierre, S.J., 64, 420 W. Pine St., died of cancer Friday at St. Patrick Hospital.

He had served as associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church for about four years.

He was born November 21, 1914, in Old St. Peter's Mission south of Great Falls, the son of Eugene E. Pierre and Mary Tabor Pierre. He served in the Air Force in England during World War II.

After the war, he studied and taught piano at the Cornish Conservatory in Seattle, returning to London for further study for about a year. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) September 7, 1950, and he was ordained June 13, 1959.

The Rev. Pierre spent six years on a Jesuit mission in Zambia.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Pierre, Choteau; three brothers, Leo, Choteau; Robert, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and John, Logan, Utah; and a sister, Marie Bailey, Clearfield, Utah.

A wake service will be Monday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and a Mass of the Resurrection will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Jesuit Cemetery at Mount St. Michael in Spokane Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Geraghty Funeral Home.
