She was the Eldest sister of Joshua Hempstead, the Diarist and daughter of Joshua Hempstead, Sr. and Elizabeth Larrabee. Her grandparents were Robert Hempstead and Joanna Willie. She was married to John Plumbe, Esq on 13 Feb 1689 in New London. John and Elizabeth had at least 11 children. The above dates and information are derived from the DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD and the PLUMB BOOK. -Charles W. Plumb, Jr.Elizabeth Hempstead (Hempsted) was born on Tuesday, Christmas Eve, 1672 to Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead (their first surviving child). Of her 8 siblings, 2 died as infants, Phebe (1), born 1669, and Elizabeth (1), born 1670, while 6 lived to adulthood...5 sisters: Mary (Greene Plumbe), Phebe, Lucy (Jonathan Hartshorn), Hannah (John Edgecomb), Patience (Thomas Ross, James Hodsell); and one brother, Joshua (Abigail Bailey).

Elizabeth was the granddaughter of Robert and Joane Hempstead, who were among the first residents of the new town of Pequot, later New London; and Greenfield Larrabee and Phoebe Lee.

Elizabeth was baptized 29 Dec 1672. Pastor Simon Bradstreet records for that day in his New London First Church record: "29 Dec 1672 Joshua Hempstead's child, Elizabeth"

Elizabeth undoubtedly grew up in the early structure we now know as the "Hempstead House" in New London. That historic house is described in CONNECTICUT, A GUIDE TO ITS ROADS, LORE AND PEOPLE: "The first section built was the west end, a one room, end-chimneyed structure with a single summer beam running from front to back."

Caulkins writes: "The house now standing on the spot, is undoubtedly the most ancient building in New London...The age of the Hempstead house is determined by the Hempstead diary. The writer [Joshua Hempstead, 1678-1758] occupied the dwelling, and writing in 1743, says it had been built sixty-five years."

On 13 February (1689), Elizabeth married John Plumbe, son of John and Elizabeth Green Plumbe. Elizabeth's father Joshua died in 1689 (leaving a portion of his estate to daughter Elizabeth). While the time-frame of Joshua's death has generated speculation, historian Patricia Schaefer is almost certainly correct when she says in the DIARY introduction: "Joshua 1st died in 1689, when his son [Joshua the diarist] was only eleven..."

Claims by LAMB family descendants that Elizabeth Hempstead (Daughter of Joshua & Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead, 25 Dec 1672-19 Sept 1733) married their ancestor Isaac are unworthy of consideration, as they are speculative, long dismissed by serious researchers, and not supported by a single historical record.

Over the course of the next 22 years, John and Elizabeth had 11 Children; 5 died as infants, children or teens: Sarah (d. 1700), Hannah (d. 1720), Daniel (d. 1708), Patience (d. 1711) and Elisha (d. 1712). Six lived to adulthood: Elizabeth (1. Thomas Bartlett 2. Joseph Truman), John (Hannah Harris), Abigail (d. 1721), Joshua (Amy Schellenger), Peter (Hannah Morgan) and Lydia (John Monroe).

Elizabeth is found throughout the introduction, text and index of THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD (written by her younger brother). In the introduction to the 1901 Edition we read: "Children of Joshua (father of diarist), Elizabeth, b. Dec. 24, 1672, m. John Plumb Feb. 13, 1689..."

In the introduction to the 1999 Edition: Children of Joshua (father of diarist): "Elizabeth, b. Dec. 24, 1672, m. John Plumb Feb. 13, 1689, d. Sept 19, 1733..."

As for DIARY entries we find these:

Monday, 4 Dec 1732 (five weeks after the death of her husband, John Plumbe, Esquire): "I was al day in Town holding a Court of Probate at Sister Plumbs Proving his [John Plumbe's] Will Mr Brown & Peirson to Assist..."

Friday, 19 Sept 1733: "I set up Last Night with Sister Eliz Plumb. She was all night a Dying. She Dyed this morn about 7 o the Clock; 60 year old Last Christmas Eve."

Thursday, 20 Sept 1733: "I was att the funeral of Sister Plumb."

On the death of Peter Plumbe, his nephew, son of John and Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe, Joshua writes for Wednesday, 1 February 1748/49: "Peter Plumbe my Eldest Sisters youngest Son aged about 48 was taken yesterday...I called to see him, he Expired about 2 clock morn..."

Finally, in the index to the 1999 Edition of the DIARY: "Elizabeth, sister...[of Joshua] (m. John Plumb)"

Elizabeth and John are buried together in the Ancient Cemetery, under a rather ornate table stone inscribed by her brother Joshua (DIARY entry for 10 & 11 Sept 1736 reads "aftern I was cutting letters in Deacon Plumbs Tombstone...home foren. aftern Cutting Letters in ye Tombstone)." The inscription reads: "Here lies the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Plumbe," and "Here lies the body of John Plumbe, Esquire."
