Ellen Marie Carter
Long-time Kern Valley resident Ellen M. Carter passed away Friday, August 27, 2004. Ellen was 95 years old. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary. Interment followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.
Ellen Marie Pointer was born April 17, 1909, in Fort Worth, Texas. She grew up in Texas where she met and married her husband of 55 years, Henry L. Carter. The couple had three daughters and one son, and moved to southern California in 1933. Henry and Ellen moved to Lake Isabella in July of 1959, and it did not take them long to realize that the Kern River Valley would be their final destination. Ellen was happiest when she was surrounded by all of her family members; she continued to cook for the masses throughout her 80s. In her free time, Ellen enjoyed working in her garden, traveling around the world, and she especially loved to fish. Ellen was a member and past-President of the 55-Plus Club, and she was a long-standing member of the the Lake Isabella Grandmother's Club. Ellen was known throughout the valley for her extraordinary skills as a seamstress.
Ellen Carter was our loving family matriarch and she will be dearly missed. Her surviving family members are many: daughter Jeanne Hilim of Oroville, Calif.; daughter Willa Crump of Bakersfield; and daughter Shirlee Blakemore and husband Curtis of St. George, Utah.
Her grandchildren are: Jan Smiley and husband Allan of Roseville, Calif.; Vicky Swenson (who was also her primary caregiver) and husband Howard of Weldon; Terry Robbs and husband Rod of Ridgecrest; Sherri Monfils of St. George, Utah; Ken Blakemore and wife Linda of Riverside, Calif.; and Diana Paver and husband Jim of Reelsville, Ind.
Her great-grandchildren are: Kim Goetzel and husband Jon of Roseville, Calif.; John Cisek and wife Tiffin of Livermore, Calif.; Nikki Honey and husband Chuck of Bakersfield; Sean Nyulassie of Riverside; Michelle Nyulassie of New York City, NY; Joe Paver of Big Pine Key, Fla.; Becky George of Davis, Calif.; Daniel, Jonathan, and Joshua Hunter of Riverside; and Casey and Chad Blakemore, also of Riverside.
Finally, her great-great-grandchildren are: Aaron, Macey, and Abbie Goetzel, Jena and Ashleigh Cisek, and the forthcoming Baby Honey.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry L. Carter in 1980; son-in-law Jim Crump in 1987; son-in-law Bill Hilim in 1998; her beloved son Jim Carter in 1990; and daughter-in-law Barbara Carter in January 2004.
Services were entrusted to the care of Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary.
