NEWSPAPER OBITUARY - Wednesday, November 17, 1897 Mexico Independent - Mexico, New York - Obituary of Mrs. Delia Ann Calkins - Died November 8, 1897 - Deceased was born of Otis and Polly Pond in Addison, Addison county, Vermont, October 4, 1814. Came to Utica in 1820 and to Mexico October, 1824, and was united in marriage with James Calkins March 19, 1840, who, at the advanced age of 85 years, and very feeble, with several of their children, survive her. In consideration that 73 years of active life were spent in the same locality, eulogy is wholly needless. But to others, I only utter what all of her acquaintances endorse in saying she was in her life and character a remarkably intelligent, spiritual-minded, consistent Christian. A living epistle, known and read of all who knew her. The aged veteran Christian soldier, Solomon Tillapaugh, tells me he was present when Elder Goodwin (grandfather of our esteemed citizen George Goodwin) received her by the hand of fellowship into membership in the Baptist church at least 70 years ago, which relation she has since held and honored. Defective hearing has prevented to some extent active association with society, but no one need be told who enjoyed the pleasure of her company that she heard the Still Small Voice and understood well His significance. Her obsequies were attended at the North Mexico church, on the 11th inst., conducted by Elder W. C. Johnson, a former pastor.
