Hercilia's name has been found as Hershia, Hersillia, Hercilia and even Marcelia. Her grave reads Hershia Rand, but most records refer to her as Hercelia.
She was the paternal grandchild of Walter Rand & Mary Ann Parker of Isle of Wight, VA who came to Wake County ca. 1783 to take over the Rand Plantation after the death of his brother, John Rand (1750-1781). She was the gr-grandchild of William Rand Sr. of England, a noted architect and builder, who came to the American Colonies and married (2nd) Sophia Almand.
Hercilia was 21 years old on June 22, 1854 when she married 22 year old Dr. Thomas Leach Banks of Panther Branch. The couple settled in Panther Branch were Thomas was a practicing physician and farmer.
Thomas and Hercelia were parents to 7 known children (4 boys/3 girls): Helio (c. 1856), Blanche (C. 1857), Everette (c. 1860), Dr. Braxton Banks (1864-1903), Edward (c. 1865), Hersilia (c. 1868) and Dalton Duval (1870-1899).
Hercelia was widowed in 1909 when her husband of 55 years passed at age 78. She died less than 6 months later at age 77.
Son, Dalton Duval, is buried here with his parents. Son, Dr. Braxton Banks, is buried in the Johns Family Cemetery in Garner, Wake Co.
