A native and resident of New Iberia, Dr. Reaux passed away at 1:30PM Sunday December 20, 2009 in a New Iberia hospital.

Doc was born in New Iberia on February 4, 1921. He was an only child. A highlight of his early years happened at the age of 5 or 6. Huey Long was coming to New Iberia and his father Wilfred took young Harold very early to secure front row seats. When Huey started to talk he noticed young Doc shuffling his feet on the hot pavement. You see at that time his family could not afford shoes for young Harold. "Get that boy a pair of shoes", Huey stated and in that way Huey Long bought young Harold his first pair of shoes.

He worked hard in the fields in high school and exceeded in school enough to gain entrance to USL and to the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. During his time at Auburn, he would hitchhike back and forth from Auburn to New Iberia at Christmas because he could not afford bus fare. Upon graduating from Veterinary School Doc worked for a short time with Dr. J. Arthur Goodwin of New Iberia. Harold started the Reaux Animal Hospital in 1947. In those days his practice was mainly mules since there were very few tractors at that time. He would work for week's sometimes just on one plantation doing the preventative health care for the plantations stable of mules.

A highlight of his veterinary career was delivering a baby from a mule. Mules being hybrids, are a sterile breed, at that time this was only the third reported case in the world.

He was a senior partner of the Reaux Animal Hospital from 1947 – 1997 when he retired. The hospital continues with Dr. Andy Reaux as Veterinarian and Tammy Reaux Talley as groomer.

Dr. Reaux served as President and Vice President of the Lafayette Area Veterinary Medical Association. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the New Iberia Kiwanis Club.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and attained the rank of Captain. He was in charge of Biological Warfare Prevention for the entire island of Japan.

At his death , Doc was the oldest surviving Veterinarian in Southwest Louisiana.

Dr. Reaux thanks all his clients and patients over all the years for making his a blessed life.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Hebert Reaux; his son, Dr. Andy Reaux; his daughter Tammy Reaux Talley and husband Billy; grandchildren, Jennifer Talley Lopresto and husband Michael and Emily Talley and two great grandchildren, Anthony and Elia Lopresto all of New Iberia.
