MaryLou Elaine Red Bear, 63, Cannon Ball, died Sept. 5, 2010, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Youth Activity Center, Cannon Ball, with the Rev. Evans Elk officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Bullhead, S.D.

A wake service begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Youth Activity Center, Cannon Ball.

MaryLou was born Feb. 16, 1947, at Porcupine, to Melvin and Beatrice (Cotton Wood) Eagle. She was raised and educated in Porcupine. At a young age, she danced traditional and fancy shawl. She attended schools in Chamberlain, Fort Yates and Flandreau. In 1967, she married Oley Red Bear Sr. They relocated to San Francisco from 1967 to 1968, where she attended school to become a hair stylist. She also attended UTTC to become a social worker.

Oley and MaryLou had made their homes in Bullhead, Isabel and Enemy Swim, S.D., and Cannon Ball. Together, they traveled throughout the Midwest and attended powwows, family gatherings and basketball games. MaryLou worked for the TWEP Program caring for the elders. She loved to read newspapers, visit family and friends and was supportive of all her children’s and grandchildren’s school functions. She raised her oldest grandson, Scott Red Bear, as her own.

She is survived by her daughters, Lori (Kevin) One Horn, Julie (Matt) American Horse and Madonna (Bryan) Silk; and her sons, Gordon (Debbie) Red Bear, Robin Red Bear, Scott Red Bear and Allen (Margaret) Siegfried, all of Cannon Ball.

MaryLou was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Beatrice; husband, Oley Red Bear Sr.; sons, Oley Jr. and Timothy; daughter, Tanya; and brother, Cletus.
