Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Bologna, Pietro Respighi entered the local seminary, later moving to the Pontificio Collegio Romano, earning doctorates in theology and in utroque iuris in both civil and canon laws. Ordained priest there in March 1866, back in Bologna he was appointed to the seminary teaching staff in 1872, and successively archpriest of the parish of Ss. Gervasio e Protasio in Pieve di Budrio. Elected bishop of the diocese of Guastalla, he received his episcopal consecration on December 20, 1891. Promoted to the archiepiscopal see of Ferrara on November 30, 1896, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 19, 1899, with the title of Ss. Quattri Coronati, and named him vicar general of the diocese of Rome, president of the Sacred Congregation of the Apostolic Visitation and prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Residence of Bishops. Resigning the pastoral government of the archdiocese of Ferrara on April 19, 1900, he served camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals from February 21, 1906, until April 15, 1907. On January 10, 1910, he was named archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica. Originally buried at the Campo Verano cemetery in Rome, in 1933 his remains were transferred to the basilica of the Ss. Quattro Coronati, his title.
