Eloise Ashby dies at 93; father founded Monticello Drug Company

Eloise Roberts Ashby, who lived in Jacksonville for 90 years and whose father founded Monticello Drug Co., died at home yesterday. She was 93.

Mrs. Ashby, affectionately known as "Grannie," was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and a Life Master bridge player.

"She just had a wonderful light spirit, was very caring and would do anything for people," said Eleanor Ashby, her daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Ashby's father, T.S. Roberts Sr., founded the drug company in Monticello in the 1890s and moved it to Jacksonville in 1908.

The company, which manufactures cold remedies, was known in Jacksonville for its distinctive "666 Colds Relief" sign. The three-story yellow building was a landmark at the foot of the old Acosta Bridge until being torn down in 1989 to make way for the new bridge.

In addition to Mrs. Ashby's daughter-in-law, survivors include a daughter, Eloise Cummins, Jacksonville; a son, Garnett Ashby, Atlantic Beach; seven grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, 1100 Stockton St., with the Rev. James Cooper, rector of Christ Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, and the Rev. Gay Rahn of Good Shepherd officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
