Journalist. In Latvia, he was active as a Menshevik, but after the Russian Revolution of 1905 he escaped to Berlin, where he joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He worked for Vorwärts until he was appointed secretary to the SPD Central Committee for Education. When Hitler seized power, he fled to Prague and worked for the SPD in Exile. Via France, he managed to reach the United States at the end of 1940 and soon resumed his work as a journalist there, writing articles for the Jewish Daily Forward and Neue Deutsche Volkszeitung.
