Daughter of William and Louisa Rummell, was born in Richland township, Steuben county, Ind., March 6, 1865. September 27th, 1906 at Hope Hospital, Ft. Wayne, she fell asleep at the age of 44 years, 6 months and 21 days.
April 26, 1874, when she was a mere child of 9 years, her mother died, for a time she went to live with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Burch. Later, she returned to her home, and there continued to live until her marriage. August 12, 1882 when she was united in wedlock with Gates L. Beard. To Mr. and Mrs. Beard, four children were born, two sons and two daughters; Shirley and Earl, and Pearl, now Mrs. Emmet Chard, and Alma.
Mrs. Beard became obedient to the gospel Sept. 20, 1887, when, together with her husband, she was baptized upon confession of her faith by Elder F. P. Arthur. Her membership has always been in the South Scott congregation of the Disciples of Christ. She is survived by her husband, her four children, a brother and a sister.
Mrs. Beard has been in the life of the community all that a good woman may well be. Within the circle of the home she lived the life of a most devoted wife and faithful mother. She made the words “home” and “mother” redolent of sweetness and beauty. She had strength and courage; few, if any, outside of the immediate family circle knew of the burden of physical illness which bore down upon her, so patient she was and uncomplaining. She truly lived for “those who loved her”.
In the fellowship of the church she was large-hearted and unceasingly devoted to her Lord and Master. Hers was not an intermittent faith. Through dark days and through bright days she was faithful, faithful even unto death, as her Lord desired. Religion to her was no uncertain quality. When she prepared herself for the journey to the hospital she said humbly, yet earnestly, in the view of the possibility of death; “It is not a question of preparation for death with me. I feel I am as well prepared now as I shall ever be.” No craven fear of death possessed her soul. She knew in whom she had believed, and she had committed the keeping of her all into His care.
In a sense death came unexpectedly; yet there was no confusion of spirit for her in the fact. In the care of her nurses and physicians, before the members of her family could be summoned, with only a few minutes warning, she fell asleep. She has left behind, not only her family, but to the whole community, a beautiful example of how serenely and trustfully a true servant of the Master answers to the summons; “It is enough, come home.”
