Mildred J. Cline, 100, of Griffith, Ind., formerly of Abingdon, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dyer, Ind. She was born March 7, 1902, in Adair, Ill., to Wallace and Mary Rutledge. She married C. Wayne Cline in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1982. Surviving are one daughter, Glenda (Tim) Marcussen of Griffith, Ind.; two grandchildren, Jon Osborne and Cathy (Mike) Poore. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Lloyd and one sister, Lillian. She attended Western Illinois Teacher College in Macomb and taught for 54 years, from a one-room school house in McDonough County to elementary and art classes in Abingdon and Avon. After retiring, she continued as a substitute teacher into her eighties. She was a member of Knox County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, Grandmothers' Club, Cottage Service Guild and Cottage Hospital Diamond Club. She earned 14,000 hours of volunteer service for Cottage Corner and Cottage Hospital. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with the Rev. Raymond McLaren officiating. Burial was in Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cottage Corner, Abingdon Christian Church or First Congregational United Church of Christ in Abingdon.
