94, of Galesburg, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, in Rosewood Care Center surrounded by family and friends.
She was born June 7, 1918, in Bushnell, Ill. the daughter of Charles Leroy and Lottie E. (Moore) Rutledge. She married Lewis Hoots in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on January 4, 1940. She then married Allen Agans in 1942 in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death on August 29, 1983.
She is survived by two sons, Leroy "Bud" (and Bonnie) Hoots and Hank Agans, two daughters, C. Sue Hook and Peggy (and Brad) Wilke (née Agans); one brother, Robert Rutledge, all of Galesburg; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two adult sons, Jack Hoots and Ed Hoots; three children in infancy, Chuck Agans, Allen Agans Jr., and Robin Agans; and three brothers, Rex Rutledge, Dean Rutledge, and David Rutledge.
In her youth, Doris was the popcorn popper at the Orpheum Theater. Later, she worked at Protexall and retired as an inspector at Gross Galesburg Company. She attended Galesburg High School. She had been a member of Prairieland Baptist Church.
Doris loved music; she sang in the church choir all her life and played many instruments. She especially loved the piano. Doris loved her family first and foremost. She loved animals and had several pet dogs. She also loved butterflies. Doris played cards and games all of her life and was a formidable opponent at the nursing home—right to the end. Everyone who met Doris loved her. Her home was always open to anyone, and she was kind to everyone she met. She was witty and sharp, with a fun sense of humor that made her a joy to be around. Doris made everyone smile.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Jeff Nielsen will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rosewood Care Center Activity Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
