BATES, Barbara Ann Saunders, 57, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 1999. The Lord opened his arms and told his daughter to come home. Barbara was born March 7, 1941 to Major Via and Bertha Saunders in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Bates; two brothers, Donald Lee Saunders and James Finney; one sister, Marlene Nichols. Those left to mourn this loss is four daughters, Myra Saunders White, Carrine "BB" Saunders Shaw, Curtis Lynn Saunders and Sandra "Cynthia" Barbour; two sons-in-law, Lewis White and Robert Shaw; two brothers, Hardy (Debbie) Finney and Ronnie (Andrea) Saunders; three sisters, Darlene (Harold) Preston, Druscilla Saunders Brown and Elaine (Mince) Gray; seven grandchildren, Latreesa, Stacey and her partner, "Lil David" Saunders, all who were very devoted, Dateash, Lateasha, Angelo and Devonta' Barbour; one great aunt; two aunts; one great uncle; one uncle; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday 2 p.m. in the Hamlar Curtis Chapel. The Rev. Dwight O. Steele, Sr. will officiate. The interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
