HAMPTON - Dorothy "Dottie" Mae Saunders Ballou was born Sept. 22, 1938 and went to be with the other angels on Jan. 16, 2008.
Left to cherish her memories is her husband of 51 years, Robert Lee Ballou, Sr., who with love and devotion cared for her during her 11 years of failing health; children, Robert "Bob" Lee Ballou, Jr., Jim and Sherrie Ballou, Jeff and Kaye Ballou Sheffield, Tim Ballou; grandchildren, Steven Sheffield, Brett Ballou, John Sheffield, Caily Ballou and special grandson, Chad Long; brothers and sisters, Marie Saunders, Bill Reed, Pat Saunders, Wally Roesler, Robert Harris, Millie and Frank Curatolo, John and Dot Saunders, Frank and Elsie Saunders Northrup, George Saunders, Mary Lou Schaffer; many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Jim Saunders, Wally and Margaret Saunders Roesler, Walter Saunders, Alice Saunders Reed and Helen Saunders Harris; many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
She was the center and heart of her family and friends. She loved God, family, church and children. Her many accomplishments included junior choir director at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, senior choir member, teacher at Emmanuel Day School, member of the Grady Circle. She also taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and helped with the nursery. She was a member of the Altar Guild and prayer chain, a mission prayer partner, vestry member, and was the first female junior warden and a church trustee.
A book inscription from the Rev. Howard Saunders states "To Dottie, to one of God's children who has taken care of God's children.' She graduated from Hampton High School Class of 1956. She was an active member of PTAs, athletic associations and band boosters at one time in all three of her children's schools. She served as Supervisor of the Sesame Street preschool program. She will be greatly missed by all who have known her.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 179 E. Mercury Blvd. by the Rev. Derick Pringle, the Rev. Rod Caulkins, and Deacon Earl Christian. The interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery with a reception to follow at the church.
