Famed Nevada Foster Mother Succumbs At 90
"Mrs. Frances Gertrude Sawyer, who was foster mother to over 3,000 children in a span of 45 years, died at a local hospital Wednesday.

She was born in Carson Jan 14, 1867 and lived in Reno at 436 Sinclair Street.

Mrs. Sawyer, a widow at an early age, reared three children of her own and for 45 years operated a foster home in Reno where she was mother to an estimated 3,000 youngsters.

Through World War II Mrs. Sawyer devoted much of her time to the knitting of afghans for the Red Cross and after the war continued to knit for the veterans hospitals.

Her son Richard was killed in the invasion of Italy during that war and another son and daughter preceded her in death.

The noted foster mother was selected as the Golden Rule mother nominee by the National Business and Professional Women's club of Reno in 1948. She was also a recipient of a Tom Brennaman Good Neighbor Orchid on a radio show years ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Sloan of Sharp Park, Calif., and Mrs. Mildred Nelson of Tonopah; two nieces, Mrs. Carrie Dent and Miss Ellen Schultz of Reno; five grandchildren, Mrs. Frances Chapman, Mrs, Sharon Evanoff and Karen Nelson, all of San Francisco, and Erlene and Richard Sloan of Sharp Park, Calif.

Mrs. Sawyer was active in Washoe Salon 291 of 8 and 40, Darrell Dunkle Unit No. 1 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Trinity Episcopal Church, The Nevada Daughters and Minerva Club of Sigma Alpha Epsilon until her death."
